Thousands in the Rochester region lost power as strong winds swept through western New York on Wednesday night. TheNational Weather Service issued ahigh wind warningaffecting multiple counties in the Rochester region, including Monroe, Wayne, Northern Cayuga, Oswego, Jefferson, Lewis, and Ontario. The warning ended early Thursday.
In the Rochester region, roughly 5,400 New York State Electric & Gas customers were without power around 9:30 a.m. Thursday, due to the wind. More than 4,000 of those customers are in Wayne County, with the brunt of the outages in Newark and Aracadia.
According to a NYSEG spokesperson, the weather caused 71 downed wires and several broken poles. NYSEG crews working to assess the damage, make repairs, clear fallen tree debris and restore power.
High winds entered the region on Wednesday afternoon, intensifying in the evening with a peak gust of 54 mph recorded at 7:33 p.m. at the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.
While Thursday morning remained windy, the high wind watch for the region has ended, said Weather Service Meteorologist Heather Kenyon. A lake effect snow warning remains in effect for parts of the Rochester region, including Wayne County.
